About a month ago, my grandpa came over with his dog and right when my cat saw the dog, he peed on the floor and jumped onto the counter top and started hissing. Now, even a month after the incident, he jumps onto very high places in my house and walks around on them, sometimes even sleeping on banisters that are 20 feet from the ground (my house has a high ceiling). The other day, he jumped onto a high window sill, got to the end of it, and starting meowing because he didnt have anywhere else to go. I had to get him down myself. Sometimes he knocks over vases and pieces of art. What can I do to stop him from climbing around high places in my house?

Cats generally like to be up high. Try to remember seeing pictures of wild animals, cheeta, puma, tigers sitting in a tree. That seems to be an instinct so please don't scold or punish him for doing what comes naturally. My cats love to sit and sleep on top of my fridge. The height gives them a sense of security and it's unlikely you will be able to stop your kitty from jumping to high places. I'm just surprised he hasn't discovered that before now. The window sill probably taught him a lesson about that particular window sill but he will find other places to jump to. You may want to put plants or something along the window sill to discourage him but make them big enough he can see there is something there before he jumps up. As for him knocking things down, that is one of the things you need to get used to when you live with a cat. The best solution is to put them where he can't knock them over. You need to do exactly as you would do if you had a 2 year old child - child/kitty proof your place. Good luck.

Mousetraps, sheets of foil, and double sided tape have all been used successfully to discourage a cat from jumping onto things. However, you might want to designate a particular high place that's okay for the cat or get a cat tree that has several different plateforms and things for him. It's a natural instinct for cats to want to be up high, where they can keep track of "their territory."

The benefit of the mousetraps, foil, or tape is that the cat can't seem them until he's already committed to the jump and the "punishment" isn't associated with you in any way, as opposed to batting his nose or yelling at him. They also work whether you're home or not.

Hi there...cats do love to be high to get a great view of their world. If you would like to discourage your cat from getting onto these things aversion techniques need to be applied in order to retrain your cat. Consider using double-sticky tape wherever you would like to discourage your cat from going. Cats dislike having their paws stuck to the tape and soo learn to avoid these areas which are unpleasant. Additionally, since your cat now prefers to be up high give him an alternative high post/tree so that he knows that place is his. Rub some catnip on the top of the tree and include a few fun toys to encourage/entice him to be there and this will also help him learn this is better than those places which stick to his feet.

I think it is natural instinct, they really can't help it. I believe there is nothing you can do short of moving things you don't want broken. However, if you don't want your cat on the counter top or certain place then blow up balloons and tape them to the ledge or where ever you don't want the cat and it will keep him away. I've tried this and it worked, my cat wouldn't go near any balloon.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?6x3G

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
