I have really thick hair too and I get frustrated that it never fits in any clips or anything, so one day I went and got it hacked off. It actually wasn't bad. It ended up looking really good and was the most manageable hair style I've ever had. It looks really chic and you don't even have to do anything to it. My sister gave me a hard time about it because, since my hair was also dyed purple, I looked like the main character and an anime we watch. I've put a link to a picture of that character so you can see the haircut.

I have to disagree with mdgirl201. I have really thick, long hair and tried to have it layered twice. The first time it just looked chunky instead of layered. Thinking the stylist goofed, I stupidly went to another stylist after my hair grew back out and, you guessed it, chunky layers. You won't get the Hollywood look of layers with thick hair. I used to hate my thick hair. It takes forever to get it into a ponytail, clips are never big enough, its hot against my neck in the summer, but my supervisor has really thin hair. Yeah, she can secure all of her hair with a one inch alligator clip, but she'll probably be one of those old ladies who have a bald spot on the top of their head. One style I get a lot of complements on is to put hair in a high ponytail; separate into two sections, one on the top and one on the bottom. Braid top section and secure with elastic. Braid the bottom section and secure as well. It's just a variation on a single braid. I even had an older gentleman stop me in a store in a mall to complement my hair! Check out your local library for hairstyling books.

my friend from camp had really long hair, but she wasted a lot of time and shampoo taking care of it. don't cut it too short because then it will just look like a bowl cut, but if you want to go short or medium, ask your salon for some face-framing layers... it softens the look and it will keep your hair from swallowing your face or looking like a bowl cut... otherwise, get whatever haircut you want!!!
