someone was recently singing the praises of thailand to me and saying how it is such a wonderful place.
But id like to know if its a safe place or if its a bit of a dodgy, public execution, midnight run, murderous cop sort of country.
i ask cause of horror stories from asia of (long term) wrongful imprisonment and murdering taxi drivers....... also cause im too lazy to search the net for the low-down on thailand right now.

Thailand like any country has its share of crime and wrong-doers. In general it is a pretty safe place and if you don't look for trouble you will more than likely not find yourself in any. There are corrupt cops but not like you have heard in your horror stories. Here, if you end up in jaiol its because you deserve to be there. Stay away from crime and illegal substances and you will have a great time. I have lived here a year...this time....

Very safe unless you go look for trouble ie drug smuggling is asking for trouble. Or picking fights
Its a buddist culture...
Usually the worst is you get fleeced.
Poor thais see you as stupid atm machine
Show politeness and learn the language you may be considered off limits to scams
They are for the most part vary decent , friendly polite people

i love thailand. the people are real friendly, and i have always felt safe, but of course like everywhere, you have to be careful, and respect the culture of the people. i dont know about bangkok at the moment, because of the recent bombings, but overall, i think it is a great place for a holiday/

Thailand is fine as long as you are there for legit purpose. Those imprisoned probably did illegal stuff thinking they can get away with it hence their reason there, or did not respect the local customs.
