No they can't, however you still should keep poop picked up out of your yard and practice proper hygeine (handwashing) after cleaning up after your dog, etc. People can get roundworms & hookworms(while rare it can happen) from pets if proper sanitary measures aren't used.
*****humans can NOT get heartworms or tapeworms from dogs nor can dogs spread them to other dogs/pets*****

Yes they can, but it is not very common and it usually is a different type than what dogs get. They are partially why many beaches do not allow dogs because whipworms (and most other worms) can live in the ground for many years and the can infect people. The only way that I know of detecting it is going to a doctor, but if you are seeing any in your stool than you need to save them go to the doctor asap (the doctor can look at the sample and probably be able to tell what kind of worm it is). The doctor can prescribe medication to help cure them.

Humans can contract roundworms, hookworms, giardia, scabies, and ringworm (which isn't a worm) from animals, just to name a few (called zoonotic parasites). Since we are not the natural host for some of these parasites, bad things can happen - instead of lodging in the intestinal tract, roundworm/hookworm larvae migrate in the body, leading to visceral, cutaneous, ocular, or neurological larval migrans. Roundworms are the third-leading cause of blindness in children (the larvae become lodged behind the eye). Humans do have their own species of worms that live in the intestinal tract, but these worms usually cannot be contracted from domestic pets. Giardia causes vomiting and diarrhea (hiker's sickness), and ringworm/scabies cause severe skin irritation and infection. Common sense hygiene, like washing your hands after contact with your dog and handling poop are the best ways to prevent parasites. IF you suspect you might have contracted something, call your physician for diagnostics and treatment.

Yes humans can get whipworms but not dog type whip worms (how is that bear2zealand). I wanted to add that humans can also get roundworms, tapeworms, heartworms and hookworms as well. Instead of heartworms migrating to the heart in the humans the larvae migrate to the lungs in humans.
I'm so sorry that I irk you so bad there bear2zealand.

Trichuris trichiura is the whipworms humans can get. Humans get not get whips from dogs! Trichuris vulpis are the whips dogs get. Roundworms are also called Ascarids, and people can get roundworms from dogs. Heartworms are also called Dirofilaria immitis. Tapeworms are also called Dipylidium caninum. Hookworms are also called Ancylostoma caninum and people can get these too.
It really irks me when people think they know it all and answer these questions blindly!! So to answer your question again, people can not get dog whipworms!

Nope. Most Parasites are species specific. There is a whip worm that humans can get, but not the ones from your dog.

My yellow lab puppy just got treated for those. Yuck. I was looking online after the vet's office said that's what he had, and humans can't contract them. (Thank God!)
