adopt adopt adopt!!! dont buy one from petsmart or petco... if you do buy one find a small small small petstore...more personal and better bird conditions, usually, but not always....just adopt... you will be so much more happier about your decision and you will be doing the bird/birds a favor also...call your local vets they usually have a rescue list..look up bird rescue groups in your area on the internet also....keep an eye on the humane society.. also join this group.. they are helpful plus the have a parrot placement page:

Try a shelter if you have experience. They take a little more work but they need someone. Though lovebirds are generally easy so long as theyre are 2 of them together and they get along. They enjoy the company of another bird to humans. I would not recommend a pet store at all. I breed birds and i gave 2 brother and sister birds to my uncle and they accidentally breeded. One of the birds came out deformed with the last joint of every toe missing and only half of one of its wings (as in the part past the "elbow" was missing). The pet store didnt even look him over and offered him full price for it when he tried to sell it to them. plus they get a lot of diseases at pet stores and avian diseases are easy to spread. not to mention the constant draft from open doors that gets them sick. at the very least you should go to a place that makes you wash your hands and sanatize your shoes before you enter and hold a bird because at least they make an effort to keep theyre birds healthy. its also good if you go and visit your bird/s a couple of time before you take them home because throwing a bird into a new home with a strange person is very scary for them.

If you are looking for a pet lovebird try some local shelters and classifieds to see if one needs a home. If you can't find one there look on line for a good breeder that hand feeds their babies.
Good luck with your search but I must warn you female lovebirds are evil ;)

People tend to recommend breeders. There are pet stores that take very good care of their birds. The environment will tell you many things. A tame bird is ideal for training. A weaned bird is ideal. Sometimes, well meaning humans inadvertently kill baby birds due to lack of experience. These birds are dimorphic meaning they cannot be sexed upon appearance. DNA testing can be done to sex the bird and costs about 20 bucks. Blood from a toenail clipping or 5 plucked chest feathers is what is needed. Good luck on your quest.

Petsmart or Petco. Here are some things to check for:
* Surroundings should be clean and fairly tidy.
* Birds should have a good supply of seed in their bowls and a good supply of clean water.
* Birds should be happily chirping and even noisy if there are a lot of them.
* Surroundings should not be dirty, heavily soiled, or very messy.
* Should not be any strong odors present.
* Should not be empty or very dirty seed or water cups.
* There should not be a lot of birds sitting on the ground or sick
looking. If so, you do not want to buy there! If many birds are sick or diseased, chances are the others have been exposed.

I would go for a breeder first if you want hand raised birds. If you don't care about that, then look in shelters and rescues. If you would like help looking for shelters and rescues, post your city and state.
