I'm just looking for some tips on how to make the color stay for longer, etc. I once heard that if you don't wash your hair for a day or two before, the color can bind better to your hair for example. Things like that.

Wait a day or two after you wash it to dye it.

Wait a day or two after you dye it to wash it the first time.

Get a shampoo that has a tinting to keep the color, like john Frieda. And get a color glaze. Use these along with a conditioner that is made for color treated hair as well.

Don't wash your hair after coloring for at least a day or two. Try using shampoo for color treated hair and shampooing it every other day to make the color last. Good luck, and do a strand test first, it's worth taking the time to do it rather than having a whole head of messed up hair.

I color my own hair and have done so for the last 30 years! I went white after I had my first child!! I use Nice n Easy. Love it .
First thing make absoultely sure you cover your sink and surrounding area with news paper of papertoweling etc. The dye can stain on your porcelain or your vinyl flooring or tile and your clothes, I use a towel around my shoulders or better still do it in your undies.!!
You don't have to leave your hair for a couple of days before or after. I wash my hair dry it and then I make sure not to put anything in it e.g. gels or mousse etc. My hairdresser says it's a myth!!! Try to use a shampoo though that treats dyed hair. Herbal Essence has one that is very good. Their conditioner is the same!!
Happy coloring!!

Well... it is true that if you hair is "dirty" the color binds better and you hair is protected.
Make sure that after you dye it you don/t wash the hair for a couple of days because it helps the pigments to fix better on your hair.
Also you should use hair products that are made for dyed hair, such as shampoo and conditioner.
Olive oil is somthing that can help you maintain your colour. Oil your hair regularly especialy if you have dryed ends. If yor roots are oily avoid that area because it may cause more grease on the roots!

I like Clairol Nice 'n' Easy. They have a lot of shades and a good conditioner. I don't believe in not washing your hair for days before or after. I don't wash my hair the day I color it. Your hair should be dry as in not wet, but not dry as in brittle and damaged. I also recommend using only a little bit of the conditioner and combing it through your hair thoroughly after coloring. If you use too much, it makes your hair greasy and it's hard to rinse out.
Also, don't change your hair more than one or two shades from your natural shade, otherwise it will look really fake.

Do not brush your hair or wash it for three days prier to coloring ,Test your coloring a day be for on your arm to be sure you are not allergic .After you put it on your hair and set the timer add 5 min to the total time .Most come with conditioner, leave this on for awhile and rinse thoroughly then rinse briefly in cold water ,this will let your hair have a shine to it .

Yeah, you don't want to wash it right before you do it, a day before works good because you don't want it to be too greasy, and make sure there aren't any hair products in it, like hairspray, gel, mousse, etc. If its not permanent, wait a day after you dye it before you wash it.
