My preference would be a labrador retriever. The breed meets almost all of your requirements except the shedding thing. They shed like crazy. The other option is a standard poodle. I'm not too familiar with their traits except that they do not shed or if so, very little. Above all, make sure you have TIME for your puppy. Proper training and socialization of any breed is the key to a good dog.

We have a female boxer that fits into all of your requirements. She is extremely loving, rarely barks, and just a blast to have in our family. She is great with kids and other dogs. We live in milwaukee and have had her in the lake before and she loved it!!! She is 60 lbs. but rather large for a female boxer. My mother has 4 females and 1 male. Her females all run around 40 lbs. The males tend to weigh quiet a bit more but don't look it because they are lean and muscular. They are very smart dogs and very family oriented. Heidi (our boxer) enjoys the out doors but doesn't want stay out in the cold or heat too long...she prefers to stay inside with us. Also she is a huge cuddler but loves to play with us and her toys. Hope this helps.

If you get a puppy, you need to remember puppies have to go through the "teething" stage so they nip and bite everything. You have to keep pulling it away from things you don't want it to bite and say "no bite" or something to that effect. You can also buy a product called "bitter apple" or "bitter end" and you spray it on surfaces you don't want the puppy to bite. It's completely safe but your dog will hate the bitter taste and not bite sprayed objects. If your family can't handle that, please don't get a puppy that is going through the teething stage!

As soon as my wife and I can afford it we want to get a Boston Terrier. They aren't big dogs, but they have all the other qualities you're looking for and they are so smart. I wish we could get one now.

How about a standard size poodle? They are smart, don't shed very much, can be a good swimmer. They do have to be groomed, but then you don't really have to have anything fancy done to it. They are pretty good with kids.
