I have acid reflux disease but mine is controllable through diet. When I was diagnoised I drank too many soft drinks, ate fried food, pretty much nothing good for me. Dr had me on prescription Pepcid, said I'd be on it for life. That was 8 years ago. I worked hard to cut out (or at least cut down on) fried food, processed sugar, fatty food, and chocolate and I only take the occasional Pepcid now.. usually after I crack and have a KFC/Diet Dr Pepper/dark chocolate binge. Alcohol sets mine off too, so no more than 1 margarita at at time for me.
Everyone is different, but I bet he can control it a lot by just identifying the foods that set it off and trying to avoid them. I found that changing my diet helped a LOT more than taking medication or sleeping at an angle or any of that did.

Here are some sites.
I put the most helpful at the top.
A main recommendation is small meals separated by three hours of time.
--------
fifth link is the search that brought up the other information here.
I get acid reflux if I eat very much bread (especially pizza, but no trouble with pasta with sauce). It may be from the grease like fast food does if too much is eaten at once.
Peanut butter in large enough portions effects me.
A small amount of milk cures me. Be careful since milk can produce acid too. I also need to take the milk in about three separate cups full since the first cup only solves the problem for an hour or so. Part of the problem is that the acid is needed to digest the food. the first link helps explain that. I believe mixing foods of different types together can contribute to the indigestion.

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://bitly.im/aMA4D
The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.
heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Oh sweetie !! Poor little fella......... get him to eat some magnesium rich food as this will realkalise his digestive system and eliminate the horrid burning sensations....... apples are a brilliant source of magnesium as is leafy and green vegies, cold water fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting, wholegrains and wholegrain cereals. Please note: the baking soda does contain aluminium so I don't know if I'd really be taking that as an option for a child so young.......... besides he would probably dislike the salty taste. GOOD LUCK CHEERS ♥ ***edit**** lactose intolerance??? is that a possibility?? this would explain the acid reflux and acid tummy..... :0)

Avoid acidic, fatty, and spicy foods. So, no chili. :) The common triggers are tomatoes, citrus fruits, alcohol, chocolate, and fried foods.
Drink plenty of water, it helps dilute the stomach acid, and prop the head of the bed up a few inches, so gravity helps keep the stomach acid down. If it flares up, Tums, Rolaids, or a tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in some water will usually help.

They say that banana's are a natural antacid. Pepcid Complete is also very good, cheapest I've seen it is at WalMart. I use those 2 examples and I use prevacid as needed, but that is a prescription.
