To have the best benefit from walking you have to consider the following :

1.The FREQUENCY you walk. eg. walking six times a week is better than walking twice /week

2. The DURATION of the walk. Doing it for one hour is better than doing it for half an hour.

3. The INTENSITY ie the higher speed, or walking uphill ,walking on soft ground etc are all better.

I suggest that you start with the eeasiest in all three and graduate gently to increasing all of the above mentioned parameters.

In this GRADUATION manner your body fitness will not slow down to finally ground to a halt. If anything it will go on improving.

Good Luck.

To gain maximum benefit from walking you need to walk for enough time and fast enough in order to get slightly out of breath and have developed a slight sweat on your brow. You should ideally walk 10,000 steps a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle - you can measure this by investing a couple of pounds in a pedometer.

If you are not a person who is obsess with loosing weight, then a brisk pace is not a requirement. Brisk paces or fast walking is for persons who want to tone their muscles and build strength and muscle as well as loose weight. But many people walk daily without loosing weight, so it all depends on how long you want and where you walk, for instance, if you climb hills, rocks and so on.

A brisk walk is OK. But it depends how fit you are. If you are reasonably fit then your heart would only be beating in the "fat burn zone" approx 55 % of your max. To strengthen your heart you need to be beating at 80% of your heart rate maximum. A brisk walk is good for you yes.
