The are exactly as depicted. I know this first hand. I graduated from boot camp and AIT in ther army.Their purpose is to break you down, and rebuild you into tough soldiers, and you don't get the job done, by being mr. nice guy.

some are. some aren't. the san antonio boot camp for army is a real chill place i heard. they don't presure you too much. just as long as you get things done and do them right. other places can be a pain in the rear though. but they're really starting to get softer on the new recruits though. saying that teaching them "gently" will help the drill sargents and RTCs get through to the recruits better than when they yell at them.

but in the end, it really depends on which branch you're talking about. comparing the boot camps for air force and marines just wouldn't be fair. lol. all of them have kinda loosened up in a way though

In the beginning, yes, they are very much like you see on tv and the movies. As time goes by, and your platoon needs less and less supervision, you see them become more mentors and less like the overbearing mongers who smoke you all day. Don't get me wrong, they still do that if you act stupid, but by the end, you will miss your drill sergeants and thank them for all their hard work. These men and women spend alot of time and energy into ensuring you become a soldier, and they truly do care.

If you are squared away, adapt quickly and do not call attention to yourself by being a kiss (*). Keep your mouth shut unless addressed and excel quietly where you can you will be fine.

A portion of DI school actually teaches "Command Voice"; how to SCREAM at a maggot without loosing your voice; the vein popping is a learned skill.

They are just teaching you how to survive under extreem stress, What the HELL is up with "TIME OUT CARDS"? Do they get to take their teddy bear and pacifier with them? "Time out Mr. bad man/woman, I am under STRESS"; you won't hear the shot that kills you if that is any consolation.

They are worse and for a reason.

There are three different kinds of drill instructors.

1) The one that wants to be there to help make the future of his branch of the armed forces brighter,

2) The one that got assigned there, and don't really want to be there,

and

3) Sadists

They'll all yell at you and make life hell for as long as you're there, though.

Remember that movies are just that..movies..however, when you go to Basic Training, the job of these Drill Sergeants is to break you down and to build you up a better person than you were when you first went in. With that said, they do what they have to do. But no, they have rules they have to follow and they cannot mistreat you. It is not like Private Benjamin nor is it a resort or vacation camp. You go there to get prepared to do what you enlisted to do. To become a United States soldier.

They are not as mean as they once were, but they're still tough.

"Stress Cards" or "Time out Cards" are an urban Legend... in other words, someone made that up.

Not anymore..They've gone soft..the new recruits even get "Time Out Cards" when they've been stressed too much, as if the enemy is going to give you a time out! Please! That was the Army I came from that you see on Television! It's all fluff and puff politically correct Bull Now!

Most of them are probably meaner that what you see on TV. They are not that way because of their personality, but because of the need to teach a recruit how to survive under the worst of circumstances. Although they are human, it is their job to be as nasty as possible without causing you harm, so you will be tough enough to deal with whatever comes your way.

I hated my Drill Sergeants while I was in basic training. But I thanked them later on.
