in the usa, all antidepressants are rx only.
St John's Wort has only mild (if any) antidepressant activity due to weak inhibition of monoamine oxidase. These supplements are not tested for safety or effectiveness by the FDA. OTC supplements are as highly regulated as t-shirts and hammers. Don't go this route, you have to step up as the friend and take her to the school counsellor or to a physician. And by all means, if she talks about suicide, then you have to tell an adult or parent.

There are herbal alternatives to getting prescribed medicines (which is how she will have to get any prescriptions, if the doctor thinks she will benefit from something). My mom swears by taking St. John's Wort. I'm sure you can get it in tablet form (just like a vitamin) but she takes the powder (which tastes pretty nasty if you ask me!).
As a person suffering from depression, it's commendable that your friend wants help. There are a lot of people that become apathetic and it's harder for them to see the big picture (I was one of those people). All I can say is support your friend and let her know that you are there for her.
But yeah, if you want to avoid the doctor (at least for now) try St. John's Wort. Good luck!

You can only get antidepressants with a prescription. She needs to see a doc to get a proper diagnosis. Depression is a serious illness and needs a proper diagnosis. She may not even have depression so enourage her to see the doc and just get checked out.

Of course you need a prescription for anti-depressants.I suffer from depression and panic attacks.I tried many different types of anti-depressants and finally found the right one.The right one for me is Paxil.Everybody is different. You need to go see your doctor and figure out the best course of action.Don't be surprised if he wants you to see a therapist.I see one every 2 weeks and it helps so much. You can't just take pills, you need therapy to talk and find out why you are depressed.Good luck to you.

Listen, i used to have depression and was involved with various doctors and psychiatrists. they didn't help at all at all. if anything made me worse and convinced me something was definitely classifiably wrong with me. i switched from a vegetarian diet to meat high diet. got stomach pains for a month but afterwards the depression was gone. basically i think most of those "healthy" diets are starving peoples brains of the things they need to stabilise mood. check your diet: if its mostly greens then rethink it. might not be as healthy as you thought it was.
