Just a noisemaker. I see it a lot in minor hockey for goals, good home team saves, killing a penalty, etc. I guess anytime people cheer. But it doesn't seem to make it into the NHL as much, maybe not loud enough. Also things like cross country skiing.

I think it is European in origin and has migrated to Canada via our large multicultural population and sharing a love of winter sports with many of those countries.

haha I'm Canadian, and an athlete and I've never heard of using a cow bell for anything sports related....I'll be interested to hear if anyone has an explanation.
Hmmmm....yeah I have seen people using them as noisemakers at sporting events now that you mention it...but people from many countries do this.

The Swiss cheer on their skiers and what-not with cowbells, even in Canada.
