Hi Foxy,
I have done a very quick search to see if I can find your uncle, I had no luck in the death indexes, so I thought I would do a quick search in the birth indexes I have been unable to find him in those either. I am going to do another search to see what I can find for you. You can email me if you like if you have any more details my email address is mamsgel1956@yahoo.co.uk speak to you soon Diane.

I haven't found your uncle's death but I have traced his birth registration;-
Aubrey V(ictor) Varnell born April-June 1913 - birth certificate reference is W.Ham 4a 107. You can use this reference if you wish to obtain a copy of his birth certificate from
www.gov-certificates.co.uk - cost 7 pounds.
His mother's maiden name is given as 'Varnell', also, which suggests he was illegitimate.
The only thing from my brief search I can tell you about his possible death is that he didn't die in England or Wales between 1984 & 2004. He may have died before that, or in another country or may still be alive , of course.

There is a central register of births deaths and marriages etc. They may want some proof of your relationship(this is easy, they will tell you what is acceptable)

If you have some idea of where he lived(as in a town) you could visit the area and check parish records.

If you have a better set of information you can try the electoral role, if your Uncle is a registered voter you can obtain a limited amount of information.

Possibly the best method is to give the information you have to the salvation army, they have a well organised operation to help find missing relatives.

He's not showing in the 1984-2004 England & Wales death indexes at Ancestry.co.uk (the easiest years to check), so he either died before 1984 or was still alive in 2005.

Checking the pre-1983 death registers quarter-by-quarter of each year is free, but it does take time - start here and work backwards - you might get lucky : http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
