Just ask the folks here for some advice, doesn't get any cheaper than that. It sounds to me like you enjoy the shabby-chic look. Here's an idea to bring the dining room and living room together. Paint the two room with the same color and use the same color and style drapes for both rooms also. Hang them about 4 inches above the window frame on decorative rods. This adds heigth and style to the room. Use the same style of art or accessories in each room. For example, if you use a rod iron style curtain rod than bring some other iron decor such as wall sconces or candle holders. Try to keep the wood furniture similar. I've done just what I suggested to you using cherry wood furniture, gold drapes and Navajo white walls (really a creme color) for artwork I have paintings of flowers in each room and decorative mirrors to add width and depth. My furniture is a collection of new and old and it looks great together. Happy decorating.

Hi:
I would look through book and magazines to see if there were any examples of rooms you like and then try to emulate them. Watch the shows on HGTV and DIY for ideas that might inspire you. For most of their shows, they have on-line information and projects are outlined in case you want to try one of them for yourself.
You might start with the pieces you have - what do you want the bones of the room to be and where do you want the focal points? If you maybe make a little prganizer board out of something like foamcore with some pictures and fabric swatches, maybe that will help you come up with a plan and organize your ideas. You might also visit your local library to look at decorating books, or bookstores (they would probably have more up to date information and ideas for you).
I live in a house where the dining room also has a large opening, and I haven't done it yet, but I thought about making my own folding screen that could be used to close off the space a little when I wanted to do that.
Hope this helps.

Talk with your friends an family. Most everyone knows someone who has a (possibly secret) designer inside. Enlist thier aid in return for a nice dinner or some such. They might even be happy to do it just for the fun of it and to help a friend.
Alternate idea, see if there are any design schools in your area. Maybe they have a program where you can involve a higher level student to assist you and they may get credit for their work (think of your home as their project). At least you may find one who would be willing to work more in line with your budget.
Just be honest with whomever you get. Tell them your budget restrictions and ask whether they can work within them, or give it a go yourself. Pick up some magazines with the look you like (Country Home is one I think) and go to town. As long as you like it that's all that matters.

I love to decorate and have a country/primitive design. I look at alot of magazines and watch TV shows. Alot of my ideas I just think up. Look at your friends homes and if you like what they have done, you can ask them for help.
If I lived near you I would love to help out!!!
