Looking on the internet and at newspaper adds etc is NOT a good place to buy a Great Dane (or any other breed).Responsible breeders do not advertise in these places. I recommend going to the GDCA (Great Dane Club Of America) site and getting a list of breeders, also go to the akc site and get a listing of the breed clubs particualrly Great Dane and contact them, also attend some shows and make contact with breders there. Also get a copy of the DANE WORLD magazine and contact breeders listed in there (Dane World has a website you can visit).
I also recommend getting a copy of the book The Great Dane Model Of Nobility by Jill Swedlow...it has a wealth of info and is probably the best written, most informative, most honest Great Dane book out there and it is written by one of the top, most respected, most knowledgable Dane breeders.

I want to reinforce that you will not find a good Dane in ads or on the internet. Good breeders will have most of their pups spoken for, before they are ever born, and will only have one or two litters a year at the most. They usually have a waiting list for their pups.

Quality is important, make sure that the parents have been thoroughly health tested and temperament tested. Don't just take the breeders word for it, ask to see the certification. You can get a puppy for a lot less money, but you could easily rack up thousands of dollars in vet bills too.

Why don't you enquire about a rescue Dane? There are some really wonderful dogs available through rescue, that will be vet checked and temperament checked.

Also be aware that Danes are not mature until they are 3 years old, and must be obedience trained as soon as they are old enough for a puppy class. And that Dane puppies must NEVER be fed puppy food.
