I've a few old cassettes and wouldn't like to buy DVDs but don't want to have to buy a DVD Combi player if it is legal to get them copied into digital format. Whats the legal situation, and are their any companies out there which will do it for me for a fee?

It is totally legal (assuming no copies are intended for resale). The easiest way to do it is to have a dual DVD/VHS machine. They are a couple hundred bucks right now. Or, find a friend who has one. My wife and I just bought one and were able to copy a VHS version of her ultrasound right on to a DVD.

I know that with my Sony Vaio, the built in software prohibits copying copy righted VHS movies.
Some older ones will slip through, I assume because they dont have some signal or flag they transmit.
I mostly use it for home movies anyway.
I am not sure about the DVD recorders.

Our copyright laws state it is OK to do that (but some organization is trying to outlaw VCRs and TiVo, If that becomes a reality...you don't want to know), and you can copy your VHS tapes using a TV tuner card and a DVD burner.. Just hook your VCR up to your TV tuner card and record. Then, burn a DVD with your video on it. You will need DVD authoring software to burn one that works, though.
