Maurice...the concept that for every action there is an equal reaction is not true. We live in a world of gray spaces. Some of us are more comfortable believing that for every right there is a wrong, but that's an easy way out. We have good minds and are able to reason, deduct, decide...for ourselves. We do not all believe the same...and that is okay.

I'm afraid it's just you.
First, there isn't an up for every down, and a left for every right. Please go downtown and look at the poor. Go to a hospital ICU, or better yet the pediatric ICU. Try to figure out their "bad for every good."
Second, God is allowing souls to be created, and then leaving them open for damnation. Think about it this way; our life, according to fundamentalist belief, is a mandatory gamble, with a chance for bliss and a chance for torment. (And the existence of other religions does make it a gamble that a person will choose the right religion.)
And third, and most significantly, the answer to your question is "People think this because they believe in a God who is not merely a piece of a mathematical formula. They believe in a God who didn't need to forgive, but has. Is that such a horrible thing?"
I hope that answer helps. And I'm not giving up on you, you'll still find God's love.

Because many believe an infinitely loving, infinitely good God could never create such a horror as Hell. Some (like myself) believe God didn't make Hell such a hell to be in; those who inhabit do. God made a place for them, and they turned into the place of such suffering that it is now.

The reason I believe there is a hell is not for the reasons you mentioned but because it says so in the Bible. God doesn't want anyone to go to hell. He wants everyone to be with Him in eternity because He loves every person He created. The problem is men and women choose to reject God. God made man with the ability to choose. We choose our destiny. It is one of two places, in heaven with God or an eternity without God. It is not God who sends people to hell as so many mentioned in other answers. It is the choice of the individual. Those who reject God are banished from living in eternity with God.

No, it doesn't make sense. For the millionth time, why should a semi-good believer who confesses his sins go to heaven, and an extremely good non-believer go to hell? How and why does it make sense that God supposedly cares more about being recognized and acknowledged than anything else?

Because the opposite of Love is indifference, not hate. If heaven is Love, then the opposite would be God who wants to have nothing to do with us. Hell is pure hate. Therefore it makes no sense.
Hey, you asked.

Makes no sense at all to me. A god who loved his children would not create a place such as hell for them. That is not a god I could love or worship. That, to me, is an evil god.
If your child misbehaved would you cast him into a fire?

See, some things have opposites, and some don't. Just because you list a few things with opposites doesn't mean everything does.
Is this what religion does to your mind? Make it completely incapable of any rational thought?
Let me see if I can explain it in terms you'd understand.
"If dogs bark
and wolves howl
and cats meow
and horses neigh
what makes you think fish don't make any sounds?"

It's just you.
Building philosophy out of childish dichotomies is nothing something that is ever going to bring you understanding.
I suppose you think cold is the opposite of heat? Hmm... and you can't figure out why that's a trick question, can you?
