I live in Europe and send a lot of my work to the USA:
If it is a canvas wrap well with either hard board or thick card board and lots of bubble wrap and brown paper and put brown sticky tape all over the brown paper so it cannot be ripped . then stick on a square of white paper for the address .If it is a drawing put it in a proper portfolio and do the same wrapping If you have to say the contents say poster so it sounds fairly worthless and silly daisies on the label to look like an unimportant present. And send it either with your local PO or if it is too big Fedex has always been very good for me .
I have never had any problems although of course it is a worry but if it is registered it really is very safe .

Any paintings I've had to ship I take to a pro packing place and have them crated, usually meaning they have wood or thick cardboard corners to protect the piece, then it's boxed and sealed. I take no chances when shipping valuable work. I also recommend having it insured or being signed for.
