I Want to start taking my dog for walks. Its part german shepherd, part chow.Over 10 months old. Looks full grown almost. Whenever i put a leash on him, he immediately lays down and looks up at me with sad puppy eyes. I know hes bored being stuck in the backyard and will bolt from the yard if a gate were left open. Im trying to give him a chance to do some exploring. Any advice?

Leave the leash on him all the time for a while.
Let him drag it around for a while so he gets used to the weight and feel.
Once he starts ignoring it and walking around, start picking it up. At first just pick it up and put it down again, then when he gets comfortable, you can walk with him.

maybe he doesntl ike wearing the leash cause most dogs doesnt put on leashes if they dont run off from the owners . dogs does gave sad faces some times but doesnt mean their upset or sad . maybe he just want you trust him that he wont even ran off from the yard. will maybe you shouldnt leave both gates wide open when youre putting him outside . if you have a big back yard with around fences with a gates doors . you can just close the gates least do that and dont have him wearining the leash when hes out side not many dogs have do have a leashes on if you didnt had a fence yard then you can put it on him .

I think he's afraid. Why don't you try showing the leash and saying words like Going out! or let's go for walk! so that he can associate the leash with a walk. Maybe you can play with him, letting him catch the leash, so then he will be comfortable with it and take it as something pleasant and not as something that can hurt him. If that doesn't work so try an harness as someone has suggested before.

Put the leash on him and walk away from him. Let him drag it around for a few hours (SUPERVISED). Do this for a few days (alway supervise when the leash is on). Soon the leash will not bother him. When you do start to walk him in a few days, take some kind of soft treat to feed him as he walks.

Yes, train him. He's long overdue. Put the leash on him (so what if he lies down). Then call him, use a happy voice, pat your leg, encourage him, praise him when he comes with you and keep walking. You should get this dog to obedience classes because it sounds like you desperately need someone to teach you how to train your dog. This dog needs exercise and socializing - give it to him!

Just practice at home first. Leash the pup and let it walk with you at home then take him out when he is comfortable. If that doesn't work, have him leashed and throw a ball or treat and let him run with the leash to get it.

You have to lay down the law. If you really want to start going on walks, you gotta tug on the leash (not like, killing him...just pulling) until he stands. If it doesn't really matter, then just forget about it. But if you wanna keep him in your yard, just put him on a chain. That's what we do with my dog.
