You can actually die from drinking too much water. It's very bad for you. Just drink the recommended 8 glasses and that's plenty!
It's dangerous to drink a lot of water in a short period of time (eg runners or in sports, etc.) as it dilutes the salt in your blood and your body can't process it fast enough to get rid of it if you consume excessive amounts all at once. Best to drink a little bit all day long especially in the hot weather so you don't dehydrate or overly hydrate.
Hyponatremia:
The extra fluid expands blood volume and dilutes blood salt levels. This causes blood salt levels to be very low, while brain salt levels remain normal. Fluid moves from an area of low salt concentration into areas with high salt levels. So fluid moves from the bloodstream into the brain, causing brain swelling. Since the brain is enclosed in the skull, which is a tight box, the brain expands and has nowhere to go, so it is squashed to cause headache, nausea, and blurred vision. Since these are the same symptoms caused by pure dehydration with normal blood salt levels, the only way to diagnose the condition is with blood tests. As blood salt levels drop even lower, the person becomes confused, develops seizures and falls unconscious.

Drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication and hyponatremia. If you drink too much water and don't replace the other nutrients then the sodium in your blood can be diluted, or watered down too much. Symptoms of this would be water retention/swelling (most likely in the ankles), and irregular heart rhythm. Drink 8-12 oz per day is the recommended amount of water. Also remember you are getting water from the fruits and vegetables that you digest as well. Try to get some protein and a little bit of carbs into your diet as well. This will help with the muscle growth, development, and maintenance.

There is such a thing as water toxicity, but it takes quite a lot of water. A woman died a week or so ago from excessive consumption of water (it was on the news) when in a contest to win a Wii.
If you drink so much your stomach hurts, then back off some. Drinking water is great overall. It flushes your system of impurities, helps your skin, and has other benefits...but don't drink so much that it causes you to feel uncomfortable. That just doesn't make sense.

About 2 litres a day is the recommended intake. The need increases in hot weather and with exercise.
If you are drinking significantly more you could possibly suffer from water intoxication where the body just cannot deal with the excess. That is a dangerous condition which can cause collapse and death if not treated in time;

Drinking too much water can cause stomach ache, nausea, and cause you to develop kidney problems in the long run. It's best to stick to about 4 pints of water a day maximum - and space this out evenly over a 24-hour period.

WEll to answer that, the recommended allotment has gone to 10 glasses a day, any more than that can be very harmful. Here in Indy we just had a girl die from Water Intoxication. She drank a gallon and 1/2 of water on a dare and DIED. Could that be a problem, it is to me...

5 or 6 8 ounce glasses of water over a day is plenty. If you are getting a stomach ache, you are drinking too much, too fast.
