Marine officers in combat trades such as infantry are involved in planning combat missions and directly involved in combat especially if they are junior officers (Lt. or Captain).About 32 Marine officers have been killed in Iraq out of 757 total Marines killed( non commissioned and commissioned officers)

Officers are commission in various branches from combat arms, to Medical Corps. First Doctors and Nurses are commissioned officers. They are classified as noncombatants under the Geneva Convention.

Rest of the officers are classified as combatants. These officers will lead troops in combat.

I do not like to get into body counts of our troops.

historically, the lower officers 2nd and 1st lieutenants are one of the greatest casualties of any war. this is because they are at the front of the fighting. the higher you go the less risk you take. starting at about Lt. Col. you tend to be a rear guard guiding the troops, rather than actually fighting. this is true of any branch where you are actuality fighting (foot soldiers) obviously, this changes if you are rear support/planes/tanks etc.
