taekwondo should be in the sporting section not the martial arts section. Taekwondo has been developed for sport most of the kicks are flashy and for point accumlation rather than self defence.

taekwondo has more in common with ballet dancing rather thank a martial art.

Uhm actually dude it IS in the sports catagory, Martial Arts is just a SUB catagory of the sports Q&A forum.

and no it is a Martial Art, just because it's induction into the olympics doesn't mean it's flashy or for point accumulation.

ANY Martial Art can be set up for a point accumulation tournament, TKD has just had more exposure due to it's induction as an OLYMPIC sport alongside Judo and such.

You really need to do more research there buddy, you're just spitballin'. Ridin' on the coat tails of all the other vehement detractors and everyone else that's just tired of hearin' about the discipline.

well get over it, and quit your cryin' kiddo, TKD has been around for the better part of 50 yrs now, and it'll be around no matter how many people say they don't like it.

and no it doesn't have more in common with ballet than self defense. that' s what it was developed for in the first place, as self defense; just like ANY other Martial Art that came before it, it was just taken to the next level: as a competitive sport.

Karate and other Martial Arts disciplines have been exposed to point sparring tournaments LONG before TKD was chosen to be in a National organization like the Olympics.

and since Tae Kwon Do gets the bulk of it's development from Japanese Karate, then you'd have to say the SAME Thing about Karate, because there's very little difference between the two.

why is it that people who're so misinformed have to show how ignorant they really are about the subject?

read this it's an answer i gave to another simular question, and i think a few other ppl need to read it.
theres good and bad in every ma.there are a lot of good tae kwondo schools, instructers and students out there but there are a hell of a lot more bad ones and unfortunately when you have a bad reputation everyone gets tarred with the same brush.thats what happens when you take the martial out and make it into business arts.and what makes it worse is anyone who does tkd says no the one i do isn't like that or my instructer isn't like the others he's good and stuff like that.thats ok if you do happen to go to a good school but the ppl who go to a bad one say the same thing only more vehemently. it's like any ma you learn it's strengths
and it's weaknesses, you use the strengths and fix the weaknesses.it doesn't matter anyway when you get into a real situation you will know whether you go to a bad tkd school or a good one,and so will others.
PS.you definately dont say shut up you ignorant bastard for the reasons i just said.you say yes i agree but... and explain it to them so that they have an understanding of it,and you'll find that there opinion will change because they will see it in a Fairer light?

Most martial arts have a flashy side. Taekwondo is so widespread it may seem sporty, but it is a martial art. Masters are as lethal as in any style.

ok, well ballet isn't a sport either...consider yourself lucky to be in the martial arts section then, instead of modern dance

man you are way off. Taekwondo fighters are good. i know because i do Kempo and we have a Taekwondo school that we are friends with and they are good fighters. and its not all for show. we have great fighters go in the ring with them and they say they fight tough.
its in the martial arts section because it is a martial art. just like
Kemp, Kenpo, Oakenowen, Brazilian Jujitsu,etc.
my dad took Taekwondo and in his opinion its great for self-deffence. he knows alot through it.
i say you should try it before you start trying to badmouth it.
good luck!

Tae Kwon Do is a sport. Just because you had a bad experience at a Fake Tae Kwon Do school, doesn't mean all Tae Kwon Do schools are bad! Respect other people arts.

franks right the rules, scoring methods & gear are slightly different. I don't know the exact differences but I'm sure its like the difference between the rules of sport muay thai & kickboxing. scoring methods are for flawless execution of technique and in a karate tournament wing chun punches wont get you points unless you drop someone with them them since they aren't karate. same with taekwondo techniques in a karate tournament & karate moves in a taekwondo tournament. the olympics would be better to go a different route though. they should have some type of hybrid striking sport with rules based on karate, taekwondo, muay thai, boxing & kickboxing rules which any martial artist can compete in instead of just teakwondoin but they could still participate. a hybrid grappling sport with rules based on bjj, judo, sambo, freestyle wrestling, greco-roman wrestling, scholastic wrestling & catch wrestling that any grapler regardless of style can compete in which instead of just judo but the judoka could still participate. and a hybrid sport with rules based on mma, shoot fighting & amateur pankration althima (modern pankration) and all other combat sports any martial artist could compete in. it would & something like mma.by like the old olympics with Pygmachia (boxing) , Pale (wrestling) & Pankration (all fighting) but instead we would have something like k-1, something like ADCC since tkd & karate both have grappling & karate was even a grappling based art to begin with originally before the post ww2 sports craze so it's erroneous to call them karate, taekwondo or judo since they are only a small fraction of their respective arts.

Obviously you are not a Martial Artist or you would have the sense, and respect to keep these kinds of opinionated nonsensical ramblings to your self.

You are illinformed. Some TKD is sport oriented, some is traditionally oriented. I train in & teach the latter.

WTF Tae Kwon Do is a Martial Sport. ITF TKD is a Martial art. Research a topic before posting your one sided and wrong opinion.
