A lot of older dogs start experiencing more anxiety. It can be several things: his hearing and eyesight is diminishing, or some senior dementia. Sometimes someone new moved into the neighborhood.
Have their been any major changes in your life recently?
I'd talk to the vet. Get an evaluation and bloodwork done to rule out physical causes. There are also some helpful meds for dogs who are starting experience senior dementia or increased anxiety.

Weird. Maybe he's getting a lil' senile. Try getting him tired, then giving him a chewy bone right before you leave.

Being as he is getting up there in age, he is getting clingy. It happens with older dogs, and sometimes resolves itself, but most times, it gets worse.
You can either spend more time with him, or accept it and deal with it.
Sorry.
