This is what my friend just found out few days ago. She was horrified and sickened by this... for four months she had no knowledge of two men (a serial child sex offender & a baby murderer) who were on volunteering work until it came out in the Sunday newspapers. They are due back to work.
The bosses at the Nursing home said to give those men a 2nd chance....
Do you agree and why?

These men get public transport unsupervised to work into Edinburgh and back to the prison at the end of the day.
They have tags on their feet so the prison keeps track of their location.

Yes, they need to be reintegrated into society. However much we hate the crimes that they have committed they have served their time. Prison is not only about punishment; it is also about trying to rehabilitate people so that they can play a useful role on their return to freedom.
I would also point out that the vast majority of child sex-offenders were victims of child abuse themselves, so, provided we safeguard children and make sure that they are not tempted to re-offend, we need to realise that many of these offenders are victims too.
And no, I'm not a soft touch. I'm a police officer who has dealt with these crimes in my time. But we need to realise that we cannot lock these people up and throw away the key. In a civilised society we have to work towards rehabilitation as the key objective of our justice system.

Depends on where you work and how good of a background check they run. She might still be able to get a job, but might have a trouble finding one. She might have to tell them upfront about her husbands issues. Which will make it VERY hard to find a job. I know for a fact they wont hire her anywhere that children are present, so that might make it very hard to find a job. A lot of hospitals do extensive background checks, the husbands issues will come up on her background check. Also a lot of other issues will come up, like where they can live and they will also have issues in any neighborhood that they move. She might want to reconsider the marriage. She is seriously throwing away any hope of a normal life if she marries him. My mom is a nurse supervisor and she told me that there is no way that she would be hired to work at any major hospital. Which will seriously limit her opportunities.

This is a tough question. I agree with one person who said that the elderly are like children, in that they are usually defenseless. However, I agree with another person who stated that the convicts were not convicted of anything dealing with the elderly. Unless they were convicted of something dealing with harming the elderly, I don't see anything wrong with them working in the elderly home. Most child molesters have a preference, and they stick to molesting kids. If they were not allowed to work there, then I guess you could also say that they could not work in a church or live near one nor any place that the elderly reside, and I think that is stretching it a bit.

Heck no, people are in nursing homes because they can not care for themselves. If they can't care for themselves how are they suppose to protect themselves against these two men!! If I had a relative in a nursing home, I would pull them out and find them a better place and I would help other families pull their loved ones out as well. If they want work, get into construction where they are working with men that can keep them in line. Go pick up trash on the side of the streets... just keep them away from the people we need to protect.

This is indeed a very serious matter: 'Social Deviants' are prone to assaulting victims who are helpless to defend themselves.
The boss (or bosses) of the nursing home in question should get his/her walking papers from the 'local authority' who will have a governing 'public health authority' over nursing homes, regardless of whether the home is private or not.
It is not up to a 'nursing home boss' to decide upon ''final chances' for 'social deviants'.
It is his/her responsibility to make quite sure that persons of 'unsuitable or questionable reputations' do not have access to 'vulnerable people' be they 'young or old, or infirm'.
In the recent past in Ireland this subject has become an important 'national issue - 'elderly people neglected and abused In nursing homes' - as has child welfare, for similar reasons.
The old, the infirm, and the young, require 'special protection' from those who 'may' abuse them in a wide variety of ways and for a variety of different reasons.

no they shouldnt.... I barely agree they should be let back out for what they done more so killing a baby...
So going off how twisted the law is if they do let them out again why ok it for them to be aroung more vunerable people thats just tempting them
if you see that as tempting them then the employer / law / goverment is themself putting vinderable people at risk...
i would maybe if understand if like it was 20 yrs down the line and they had some personality change and lived good maybe even then i think there is a line of humanity and when you pass that there is no going back
fantsy desires once they are opened they are always in the back of your mind
if it turned you on it will again
if you can stoop low you can again
i think murders are sick
but those who can look in the eyes of a innocent child and hear their crys for help and abuse them give me their address ill go KILL them myself

No. It is NOT right.
There is plenty of work elsewhere for them.
Tell your friend to object to their being in the nursing home.
They should be nowhere near the old and infirm.
If it is thought they want a second chance then let them work on jobs with strong people who would be aware of their past and who agree to work with them.
I am tired reading about the help and effort put into law breakers when people who never do wrong and find it hard to get along are ignored.

I don't think it is 'appropriate' to have sex offenders working ANYWHERE there are people who are NOT CAPABLE of 'defending themselves' or 'protecting themselves' or MAKING THE DECISION whether the 'contact' is okay or not okay. Therefore, NO, it is NOT RIGHT to have sex offenders working at a nursing home, whether they are 'volunteers' or not. No, there should NOT be 'a 2nd chance' for ANY CONVICTED SEXUAL OFFENDER, EVER! The law might say that once a prison sentence is served, a criminal deserves a second chance, but 'sexual offenders' should NEVER be considered a criminal that one time, because they 'tend to' re-offend many, many times, and could easily re-offend again, even if they'd 'had treatment' and are 'considered safe' ... and if their punishment is 'cruel and unusual', then that's appropriate, because what they did to another person (child or adult) was cruel and unusual and will stay with them for LIFE.

Personally, everyone deserves a second chance. However, a SERIAL sexual predator, even though he was a pedophile, or a murderer would be disqualified from working in those fields in most places.

I wouldn't want a sex offender of any kind to take care of anyone in a nursing home ! Most people in a nursing home are totally incapable of helping themselves or clear train of thought for that matter. To take a chance of any kind with these innocent people is unacceptable !
