We have a puppy from a shelter the looks a lot like a beagle and a lot like a basset hound. His legs are real short and his ears are real long. Does anyone out there have this same mix? If so, wht does yours look like?

I am a big lover of the basset/beagle mix. Best combination of a dog. Most of the time from what I have seen, they have the beagle markings and the short body and long ears of the basset.

The first thing you have to do is find out if she is a hunter or a house dog. Most hunters will show very early, she could be scared of guns. If she reacts to,"get the bird!", she will make a fine hunter, if not, eh, I have had the best, And I do mean the very best beagle, pheasant dog on earth. We were spoiled by that dog, have never seen one better, from day one when he was a pup, we didn't know if he would be any good at it, but we got the surprise of our lives, unbelievable, he was a natural. He put purebred trained hunting dogs to shame, and he had no training, no discipline, he did what came natural. If he put up a bird and you missed, he would come over and bite your leg! If you so much as looked like you were going hunting in the morning, he started going nuts, put on your boots and he's whining, orange jacket, he's clawing at the door, touch your shotgun and he's yelping ready to go. open the door and he's gone, you wouldn't walk 100 yards in the back yard and he would have rabbits running in front of you. Take your dog for a walk and see how he reacts to birds, squirrels etc.

It depends on which parent had the most dominant genes. That's the thing about mixes, you can't predict what they will look like.

If he looks like a cross between a beagle and a basset, he probably is. I used to foster one for rescue, he was a wonderful, intelligent dog, but quite a handful. In rescue we call this mix a "bagel".
