It is related to their plight of overcoming "attachment" which is a major concept in Buddhism.

They do not want to have emotional attachment to worldly things, including their own physical appearance.

I believe that is the rationale for the monks shaving their heads.

But don't quote me on that ;)

Monks shave their heads for various reasons... a way to refrain from vanity, lessens the necessity to "waste" precious time fiddling with hair as opposed to studying/practicing the Dharma, etc.

Buddist Monks shave their head for one simple reason, when they are in swimming competitions, they gotta be fast. You cant be all religious and lose at something. It would disappoint the big J. In hind sight, your an idiot for not knowing that.
