The Old Testament states that man was made in the image of God. But does that mean that we should see God as an image of man? There are many ways we may be created in the "image" of God without necessarily "looking" like God.

For example, the atoms that we are made from resemble astronomical bodies (atoms resemble solar systems and galaxies). Our neurons are fired by the same electricity that permeates the Earth and the Universe in the form of lightning and electrical storms. We are made with the same material that everything else is made of; isn't God everywhere and everything?

Is it not arrogant to think that we are God-like? Is it not self-centered to believe that we are an exceptional being and closer to God than any of his other creations? Are we really that important?

We used to think that Earth was at the center of the Universe, than we made our Sun at the center of the Universe, than when both theories were proven wrong we made our galaxy the center, and again we were wrong.

It seems that we have a tendency to put ourselves in the spotlight of God and the Universe. Is this a proverbial “slap in the face” of God, and ultimately causing harm to ourselves with our pride and vanity?

It seems there is much truth in what you say. Was adam the first man? or Atom? I have heard it said that the outer universe is but a reflection of the inner universe within man. I have experienced that the essence of our being is unconditional love, we have unity with God in unconditional love within our hearts.We/God are the life of the body. We/God are light. we/God are unconditional love, we/God are humility. we/God are peace. we/God are silence. "God dwells within you as you". AS the colors of the rainbow are contained within sunlight so to are we contained within the light of Gods unconditional love.

John 17:3,5,24; Col.1:15-17; Rev.3:14;
Jesus was with God before the world was, the first creation created in the image of God, by him all exist.
Gen.1:26;
God said," Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." So Jesus and Adam were created in the image of God, no sin, no death, Adam sinned and die, his offsprings are born in the imperfections of sin and can die, at any age from any number of reason, that only leaves Jesus our Lord and only Savior in image of God.
He died to purchase all from the imperfections of sin and is made alive forever.

Yes, when the bible says we were formed in the image of God it meant spiritually. We have a soul which is kind of like another body for us and it is the only true connection between us and God.

people think of god as a human because of that phrase that we are created in the image of god. and because ever since the beginning of humanity men have been seen as stronger and more powerful than women its easy to assume "god" takes the form of a man

since religions are imagined/created by mankind, including the bible and christianity, it's common to think of god in man-like terms and images. mankind created it, and created the cult stories.
