What happens is that spasm causes pain and pain causes spasm - so you need to break that cycle.

You can do this several ways - a regular painkiller - I mean every 4 hours, not just when it seems to hurt most . Whatever she generally uses - aspirin, Panadol, Nurofen or something like that, taken three or four times a day for three or four days.

Warm compresses - like a hot damp wash cloth or hand towel, put around the neck until it cools, and then re-heated. She can do this as often as she likes.

Then massage her neck, with either massage oil, or something like Ben Gay - it will loosen and relax the muscles and help with the stiffness.

If it doesn't go away within a few days, she should see a doctor, to rule out anything serious.

Stiff necks can really hurt - so "baby" your mom for a day or so !

I hope this helps, and that she feels better soon.

I have found two things that help!
I see a chiropractor regularly as I have arthritis in my neck and back. I find it works well as it takes pressure off the vertebrae. Also, I like Celdarin cream. I
find it's natural, inexpensive and available in most drug stores.
I find it much nicer than other muscle creams. It works fast and a little goes a long way! It smells really nice and isn't greasy or
unpleasant smelling. It smells really nice and it's light. A jar costs $8.00 and lasts about a month.

Well I know the feeling, usually an ice pack on the direct knot in the neck that is causing the pain - ice on for about 15 minutes at a time .. and asprin usually helps also. Hope your Mom feels Better.

Rest the arm if necessary in a sling and take some ibuprofen or Tylenol. A message and heat might help.

simple, fill an empty pepsi bottle and put in the freezer, make her lay on sofa and put under her neck for 20 min, then fill another bottle with hot water from the spiket and put under her neck.
