Making him understand is not your problem. Start making changes in your life to distance yourself. When he sees that you are seriously moving on, he will eventually accept it. You need to leave before he'll believe you.

Be firm with him and just tell him that it's over. I wouldn't recommend that you just start dating other people, regardless of whether you want to or not, just because you want a clean break, and he can't just say something like - well, you just wanted to date other people so you broke up with him.

I think a big thing is you acting like it's over. If it's been five years, then that means that you're still showing him signs of affection. Break it off as if you were moving away to a different country - no contact, no conversations, but maintain a civil relationship because he's still the father of your children. But if it's not kid related, you don't need to talk to him. Just be aware that you need to be crystal clear about your break up. No mixed signals. Good luck.

Pack his stuff and tell him you've had enough and want him to leave. If he caused any problems call the police.
Try not to get into a fight about it try to talk like adults
Please don't bring the kids into your break up but make sure that if you're not comfortable with him seeing the kids at you house try and make arrangements for him to visit them at another place.
Good luck
