plentyoffish.com is free
I got out of some of them because most of the guys was just looking for sex, I was not looking for that so paying big bucks for some guy to get nasty with me was not my cup of tea.
P.O.F is free but i find that most of the guys post photos of them wan thy was younger not how thy look now, also a wast of my time for dating.
but i stay on there just to make friends with out meeting any one it gives me something to do wan I'm home and have nothing to do.
with P.O.F. you get a mile box, IM, your own page and a two ways to keep your contacts in order and a page to see how has you on there contact list ,
It's the niece's one i found. hay it's free, and you can even stop the nasty ones from contacting you.
Also a setting to have contact from people from your zip code only.
try it you may like it. I'm on there under gentry.

I had someone offer me a dog from nigeria. It was a total scam. Here's a tip that the bank tell a lot of people. Don't trust anyone that says they need money if they are in nigeria or the uk. In general anywhere internationally. They could live a block away and say they are elsewhere and just have a friend send it to them after you all ready have. Also, dating sites are a scam because they could get a picture from google, put it on, and say whatever because you can't see their face, just their words. They don't have to be the person they say they are. Always make sure they live locally. Even better, don't do dating sites at all. Look around work if you have a job or school if you're a student, OR, just wait for the girl that will love you as you are and not try and scam you over the internet.

Some sites are legitimate. The best sites I think or at least that I have found are Yahoo Personals, Match.com, and eHarmony. I think these really try to match people as far as what aspects they value as important and what exactly are they looking for in a mate. Of course, as with anything, the final decision is left up to the individual. Any good site is worth its price and the better sites do charge more but at least you get what you pay for as in anything. Just remember this.

They aren't all scams... You can do the free trial things and go from there. I met my Current B/F on a gothic dating site, and we have been together a little over a year and a half. You never know unless you try. You only live life once and why not go for it! Just like I said do the free member part only!

there are alot of scammers out there, check match.com I know people that have met there.....other try and see what the Better Business Bureau says on them (just remember if you can't find them it doesn't mean they are okay it just means that they may have a different parent company, home base, too new, ect.........), you could also try some of the web sites like myspace or yahoo, just use caution with these type because they are not pre-screened. Good luck!!

The ones that charge exorbitant rates are, yes. Although there are some really good ones out there that are properly free, and won't spam you. Two I know of are www.okcupid.com and www.plentyoffish.com. (I still recommend donating some money to the for the upkeep of the site, though, as a lot of work has to go into their creation and maintenance)

I work for a state agency that has investigated just about every major dating site. What we have found is that all are committing borderline fraud. Most of the people (women) don't actually exist rather, it is employee's that respond to the contact email. It's very difficult to prosecute these types of companies.

I don't have personal experience but three of my professional colleagues have met their partners through professional dating sites.
I wouldn't bother with the sites that allow non members to view members and stick to those with high monthly subscription fees!
