I doubt it will ever be banned, but there will be a permanent change in the sport within 25 years.
As much as I love autoracing, it has huge economic and environmental costs. At almost all mid- to high-level racing series, the "best" fuel efficiency is about 1.7km/litre (4mpg). Add to that the cost of tires which usually last no more than 150km (90miles); tires are made from petroleum (oil) and so is asphalt which paves ovals and road courses.
Economically, Formula1 costs teams (collectively) TWO BILLION DOLLARS per *year*. And even cheaper top level series like Champ Car, IRL, NASCRASH, ALMS, DTM (German Touring Cars) can cost US$10-40million just to be competitive, never mind win.
The only way autoracing will survive in the future is by turning to electric power. It's not far off; there are cars today capable of going up to 400km (250miles) on one charge and the fastest street-legal electric cars are capable of 240km/h (150mph). Lithium-Ion batteries for cars are now feasible instead of putting 50 lead-acid batteries as some used to do.
Concrete surfaces are also much cheaper to produce, even if they have less grip than asphalt. Or perhaps rally racing will become the standard, since they run on any surface (mud, snow, ice, gravel, sand, dirt, asphalt).

You're seeing now as a result of environmentalist. But you see more effects on cross country style racing such as Rally, Trials and desert racing. Rim of the World, and very old stage rally just north of LA was cancled this year because of a new rangers attempts to conserve the area. Actually, the forest has been closed to all motor vehicles with the exception of ATVs (action of the state). But it will be many years until you see auto sports such as NASCAR or road racing go away for environmental reasons. Chances are, cities and ordinences will shut that down long before the environment. But no anyway.

It was easier to ban fox hunting, it didn't or couldn't effect as many people. Motor sports have a lot of money and support a lot of people. Whole industries would face major issues if it stopped. If there was a movement to find an alternative fuel (and there has been from time to time) then the sport would evolve.
Of course the same could be said about Cars, SUVS, etc as they all pollute. Mass transportation has less accidents and pollutes less if done right... then there is that issue of freedom of course.
We haven't hit critical mass, so right now, not an issue.

Fox hunting wasn't banned because it was a waste of resources, it was just plain cruel. No doubt the environmentalists will moan about motor sport, but the sports regulators limit the amount of fuel that can be used in a race mainly to restrict power outputs, but it also reduces fuel consumption.

Motor racing doesn't use many resources or pollute much by itself.
What does that is many thousands of fans driving to the track.
So racing will be banned at the same time that baseball, football, and soccer are banned. They're all about the same for environmental damage.

the real key is profit, racing offers a test bed for r&d as well as a huge advertizing platforn, also merchandise sales, when there is this much to gain in business environmentalists can hollar all they want, racing isnt going to go anywhere,
look how hard the green movement has been bashing " big oil" companies yet exxon poasted two record quarters last year
fox hunting had lettle to protect it

It's time they banned the Grand Prix's they have become so boring these days and the only one worth watching is Monty Carlo as it's the only one where anyone has a chance of winning. The huge amounts of money spent on GP is incredible and the return (for the viewers) is minimum.

The enviromentalists are needing to ban China first, they pollute more than the rest of the world put together.
