Hi there...PLEASE DO NOT SELF-ADMINISTER human medications to cats as this can very LETHAL. Cats cannot metabolize human medications which is why it can be very deadly. Cats are prescribed medications based on their age, weight and overall health condition if there are no hidden dangers. Generally, when cats have an upper respiratory infection (URI) they need to be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine which antibiotic needs to be prescribed for the secondary infections since the URI itself is not bacterial rather a viral infection.

Perhaps you can ask friends or family to loan you a little money to help with your veterinary care. A cat's life can be put at great risk if they are ever given human medications.

I wouldn't give anything to the cat without first consulting a vet first. I've had several courses of antibiotics prescribed to my dogs and cats, and I've never seen penicillin prescribed. If it's a simple cold; they probably won't give antibiotics anyways. Antibiotics don't help at all against viral illnesses like colds, and in fact they actually hurt things by causing the animal to become resistant to that antibiotic.
They might prescribe antibiotics if the cold has progressed to bronchitits, though. Cats have a much different metabolism than ours, and it would be a very risky proposition to give your cat antibiotics meant for people. It would be very easy to overdose the cat, and either seriously injure or even kill it. In addition, penicillin allergies are very common and can be life threatening. If your cat is allergic to penicillin, you could cause a deadly reaction by giving the cat that antibiotic.

Hope this helps...

You need to be careful with penicillin, some cats are allergic to it. I know a farmer that gave a stray cat a shot of penicillin and the cat started to have seizures almost immediately & died after about 10 minutes.
If the cat is having trouble breathing, you can put him in a steamed up bathroom or use a humidifier.

Just wait until you can take the cat to the vet. Penicillin is for infections, and a cold is not an infection so it wouldn't help anyway. Do not give the cat aspirin. Aspirin is sometimes lethal to cats because it causes kidney failure. To be safe, just wait until you can take the kitty to the vet. If it's just a cold-type illness, the cat will be fine until then.

First, you don't know its a cold, so definitely don't go trying to treat it on your own. If the cat seems sick...versus just sneezing occasionally or something...you could call your local animal emergency clinic and describe the symptoms. IF there are any home remedies you can try, they will tell you over the phone for free.

NOTE: If you take the cat in to the emergency clinic, there is a charge, but phone consultations are free...as long as you don't abuse the privilege.

cats don't get colds, they get upper respiratory infections. You should never give a cat human medicine, many of them are deadly to animals. Wait until you can get to the vet to get the right medicine, usually amoxicillin is given in a liquid form. I would not chance overdosing your cat and using the improper medication. Better to let your cat be uncomfortable for a day or two then for it to end up dying from having the wrong medication.

i choose to advise going back to the vet. As others have suggested, respiratory infections are many times viral. The viral infections often times observed by using secondary bacterial infections. this could clarify why the antibiotic helped however the indicators back. I particularly have a cat that's contaminated with FHV (pussycat herpes virus). She, too, has respiratory indicators as a effect of the virus. to no longer problem if it is what your cat has, because it particularly is not contagious to human beings and is rather doable with ideal medicine. it must be that it is what your cat has. in spite of if that's, putting him on an anti-viral medicine can circulate an prolonged thank you to maintain the indicators at bay. My FHV cat has been on an anti-viral (Viralys) for some million.5 years and it makes a huge distinction in her indicators. She purely has flare united statesoccasionally, and the vet prescribed nostril drops to apply while she does have a flare up... they help plenty. wish this facilitates... and better of success and wellbeing on your kitty.

If it's just a cold the cat can make it by itself unless he gets worse and worse. my ex never took his cat to the vet when it had a cold. I would NEVER use human medication on an animal without my vet's supervision.

Can you call your parents/sibs/friends and ask for a temporary loan till you're on your feet? Also, maybe they can provide transport if you shouldn't go out after your surgery.

Just keep the cat inside and cozy warm. Long as the cat is not crying in pain or lythlis it will be fine until monday. You can wipe its nose once in a while if that makes you feel better

penicilan will not do anything, thats why people don't even take it for that. Cats rarely get colds, so I'm thinking it may have distemper, and the sooner that is diagnosed, the better chance your cat has...good luck
