it depends assuming you have service pack 2 go to
start-->control panel-->add and remove programs--> click remove windows messenger
however, this just simply keeps Windows Messenger from automatically running when you start Windows XP. The Messenger program is still on your hard drive because Microsoft says that Windows Messenger's "Messenger Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)" is necessary for Outlook 2002, Outlook Express 6, and the Remote Assistance feature.

If the prefix 'pre' means 'before in time' and the word 'installed' means 'already put in' here then I wonder what it is that needs to be removed. To me preinstalled software has not yet been put in the computer. With that being so; and to answer your question: you wouldn't have to do anything.
Yes?

quiet surprise that u don't c there!
try to remove manually ...
c:/program files/msn messenger(?) and c if there's any uninstaller ...
if that doesn't work then, download new version, install and then uninstall from add-remove list.

If you can't find it,it's the same as not being installed. It's not going to leave your computer all the way.So just leave it there.
