Here's a good idea I just thought of: You should have some type of beauty school/ college in your town & you could go there to get your hair done for really cheap. The girls there are learning & most of them are pretty good, especially at simple updo's. I had my hair done for prom at Redwood Beauty college & the girls were really nice & funny & the girl doing my hair did an amazing job I was so happy with it. Tell them your event & let them take over. Other girls I saw there getting ready for my school's prom had brought pictures of celebrity hairstyles & were totally disappointed that it wasn't "perfect" & exactly like the celebrity's hair. Go in there & tell the girl about your event & tell her to do whatever she wants. It will turn out much better if you let her have fun w/ it & do a style she's used to. Plus they'll look at your features & decide what shapes flatter you & they will adjust their style to that.

Otherwise, if you don't have $20-30 & a couple hours to spend & you want to do it yourself then:

Putting it in a bun w/ braids leading into & throughout your hair would look classy (buy those tiny, clear rubber bands at a drugstore to hold all the little braids).
Putting it up & curling it would also look very nice. Maybe even going for a bit of a rock& roll look w/ the Gwen Stefani bump thing. I'm not sure what the name for it is but you tease a good front middle section of your hair & clip it to the top of your head so that you create the bump thing. W/ you hair up & the back curled. (Look at my yahoo 360 page & there's a picture of me & my prom hair from last year w/ the "bump" I'm talking about)

There's this style I keep reading about on here that sounds really easy & cute: You'll need someone to help you:
You turn your head upside down & someone french braids your hair up towards your forehead. You tie it or pin it & then curl the rest of the hair hanging in front of your face.

Dont get yourself too worked up over it. It doesn't have to be perfect since every other girl at the formal is going to be thinking about whether or not their hair is perfect. Worry about having fun, not looking perfect.
