I have a Benji-like terrier mix who's a real sweetheart. He's not aggressive and is basically very friendly. The one exception to that rule is when we're out for a walk and are approached by another (bigger) dog. Even if the dog only appears curious and not aggressive, my dog starts to get defensive and growls after a few minutes. Obviously, these bigger dogs could have him for lunch. I'm sure he's a bit intimidated by the size of these other dogs. However, most of them are friendly and just want to get to know him. Is there anything I can do that will help calm him and just make a new friend or two?

Dogs will either fight or flight. They will either submit or dominate. Your dog is acting out of fear but it's understandable. This happens a lot with my Akita. He is very playfull and likes all dogs. If he is going to get attacked it's usually by the small ones that he could take out in seconds. He just kinda stares at them as if to say - I just wanna play!
The only way to deal with this is to make your dog face his fear. If you have a family member who owns a larger breed dog - Borrow it and take it for walks with your dog every now and then. Also - let the other dog owner know the problem you are having with your dog and ask them if you can train your dog by using there dog. Then simply get your dog to sit in the prescence of the other dog, everytime your dog barks or growls pull on leash and say NO!. Be calm but confident. You must get your dog to face it's fear. Over time it will learn to trust dogs.

You can try giving him this before going on walks. It works to calm down my dogs before going on a car ride. Also, talk to your vet about it - she might have some suggestions. Terriers are notorious for getting wound up.

Take him to the vet....they have doggie PROZAC...my friend's dog is on it for separation anxiety. It seems to work rather well.
