Considering the rate at which the world uses resources (including China and India, which are getting bigger by the second), global warming, the fact that the seas will be fished out in 40 years, famine, genocide, disease, and nuclear armament, how long do you think it will be before most/all of the people on earth die? That is, how long has civilisation as we know it got to live?

My guess is that we don't make it to 2070.

All of these dire predictions are actually just alarmist talk. You are probably too young to remember this, but back in the late sixties there was an extensive program put together to model the Earth, population growth, food supply and resource use. The model predicted that everything would fall apart in 1972. We would run out of food, oil. and other resources. There would be mass starvation, people would freeze in the dark and industrial society would collapse.

Of course none of this happened. There are several reasons why the models failed so completely, but one of them was that the scientists involved in developing the models allowed their political and social agendas to affect (probably unconciousely)the modeling assumptions. These same biases prevented them from seeing the technilogical advances that were already in progress that dramatically altered the worlds food production (the so called Green Revolution).

If you can still find a copy, you might want to read the report of this study (Limits to Growth, the report to the Club of Rome). It caused quite a stir when it came out (about the same as Vice President Gore's movie "An Inconvienient Truth"), but today it is just an amusing example of alarmism, which is where I think Vice President Gore's movie will be in thirty years time.

It will last way much longer than you anticipated...

World's resources are not really scarce as it is said,,,it is in an abundance state all the way through...

The problem is finding these resources & investing on digging it our or finding it,,,

Plenty areas round the glob not being explored up to now...

No matter how much catastrophies will add up in all diretions, we still have some time to live through...

With nowadays modern technologies we can turn deserts into green fields...

Livestock multiplication can be monitored to feed the world population if it is meant to be achieved...

Wars will eat many of us alive, but will not make us distinct...

Only one thing will call for all of us to put our heads between our thyes & kiss our asses goodbye, and that is DESTRUCTION OF THE WHOLE WORLD by a commet or a medior like the one we saw in that movie; ARMAGEDON....and that is very unlikely to occure in the coming 70 years...

in another 20-30 years, we will have to share resources based on population in the world. India and China will survive as they have population.

Once we get past this econmic depenancy on what currently exists we can move on to the next few hundred years. Problem is we find it hard to give up what we are use to.

Who cares? Live for today, help your fellow man, and make sure that when we all go to meet whoever it is up there, that we have no regrets.
