It is 80 % skanky. Camp Pendleton is right there and the drama that goes with a military base that has many low income families and young guys feeling randy. Closer to San Diego. And 17 miles north you have the famous San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. There is a reason the beaches are pollutated w poop periodically there and even the grunions are not running like they used to.

It's about halfway between L.A. and San Diego, just a bit closer to San Diego. There is an enormous military presence, which makes it a lot more conservative than many other places in So. Cal. Because of all the recruits, there are also lots of cheap bars and quite a bit of prostitution. Away from the sleazy strips, though, Oceanside is a laid-back beach town. It's a big surfing area, with a pleasant setting between the coast and the mountains. It's also one of the most affordable places to live in southern California.

Oceanside is in San Diego County, so it is closer to SD. It is not the best city in the county, but not the worst either. Being in SD county, it is pretty relaxed, though
