Hi there... predetermined genetics is the basic factor which determines what colours eyes, hair colour, body size, etc.
Cats with blue/yellow eyes are not common, but yet not uncommon as as well.

True example of what should be done when poisoning of a cat occurs or is suspected. There was a hornets nest that had been 'bombed' with penetrating oil and RAID WASP and HORNET killer laying on the road in front of my house. At approx. 4 PM yesterday my cat snacked on it and ingested dead hornets and larvae ( a lot of them ). We thought that we had made her throw it all up, but to be safe I paid a neighbour of mine a lot of money to drive her to a vet 200 miles from here because our vet is 'not available' at this time. This was at the urging of a poison control line, a very helpful member on this forum and the folks at S.C. Johnson (the makers of RAID). I even called the local Hospital and got information from a real doctor. About 1/2 an hour ago I got a call saying my neighbour and my cat are on their way back home. MY CAT IS VERY MUCH ALIVE AND WELL, albeit short one of her nine lives. Somewhere in here there is a valuable lesson. Try to figure out what that is before you get another cat.

There's a cat like that at the shelter where I volunteer. I don't know the real reason but from being with her I think it is just a natural thing..like why do I have brown hair with red highlights? She could also have a father with blue eyes and a mother with brown.

it has to do with the genes the determine eye color. i know in humans blue eyes are caused by a the lack of the brown pigment gene. there is also a gene that determines if you make yellow tone in your eyes. i'm not sure if its the same in cats, but for different colored eyes, something is up with the the genes and protein function in one eye. or if you have a serious eye injury it can cause eye color change. plus genes can turn "on" and "off" depending on the environment

It is either a genetic anamoly/mutation, or their pigment was damaged somehow. It's no big deal, though. It happens to people, too. It's just kinda rare.

This deals with the phenomena in people, I'd imagine it would be the same in animals: http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20020724.html
