They aren't bad for you, but you have to watch out because you can get food poisoning from salmonella bacteria from uncooked eggs.

Most adult digestive systems can fight off any bacteria you will find in raw eggs, however, talk to a doctor before starting any exercise or diet plan...

The risk of bird flu from eggs is negligible at best...

The reason you see people having them is that they're a good source of raw protein... However, I would suggest egg beaters over a raw (or cooked) egg any day. They are only 30 calories per egg (because they're nearly pure egg white) and come full of protein!

Years ago body builders used to eat a dozen raw eggs for breakfast.

Nowadays you are more likely to get salmonella. Main criteria is not to give raw eggs to babies the elderly or pregnant women.

Raw eggs can be found in foods like mayonnaise too.

I am not sure they are any "better" for you nutrient-wise than a cooked egg but you would want to be very cautious about food poisoning- eggs are notoriously prone to cultivate GI devastating microbes if they are cracked, old, etc. When I was young, I was too thin and my dad every day made me a chocolate milkshake with a raw egg mixed in and it was soooo delicious.
