I just bought a little chihuahua for my kids and even though we do the morning, after feeding and night routine of taking him outside, he's still peeing and pooping everywhere. I feel like giving up (but I obviously can't). HELP!!!!!!!!

Good lord, the dog needs out at least once an hour. No wonder he's using your house as a toilet.

FYI Chi's usually respond well to litterbox training too

Potty training takes a lot of hard work. Here is my suggestion to you... I know it seems cruel but you may need to do something called, kennel training. You have to buy a small pet cage for your puppy( it cant be much bigger than what the dog is because a dog will not usually go to the bathroom where it sleeps...if it can move away from where it went to the bathroom and go lay on the other side of the cage, you aren't helping the cause) so, get a small cage. Keep the puppy in there until you have enough free time that you are able to watch him/her at all times. My puppy trainer suggested getting the dog a leash and clipping it to your belt so that you are always with it. Whenever you are done playing with the puppy, put it BACK in the cage... Since your dog is a very small dog by nature, and even more small when it is a puppy, its going to have to have a small bladder. You need to take him/her out OFTEN!! If you do see puppy going potty in the house, be stern and say NO! (you may even swat it with a newspaper, never your hand) and put the puppy out side immediately! The key is always being able to watch puppy when its out and taking it out ALOT. Usually puppies will go when they wake up or about15-20 Min's after they eat!

When you're housetraining a dog, any dog, the idea is not to let them make a mistake. Dogs learn very quickly through positive reinforcement, not through punishment.

While training, you need to keep him in the room with you so you can watch him. A young puppy needs to be taken out after a nap, after hard playing, a long drink, or if he just hasn't been out for a while and is acting restless (circling, nose down). You need to go out with him, tell him "go pee", give him LOTS of praise the very second he pees, then come straight back in. This way he learns to differentiate between potty time outside and play time outside.

Until he's reliably house-trained, you need to keep him in a crate when no one's home and at night. Also, before you start training him, it's vital that you do a thorough cleaning of everywhere he's gone before so that he can't smell it or you won't be able to stop him from continuing to go there.

Is he a puppy? Puppies need to go out at least once every couple of hours usually every hour. We took ours out every hour until he was 6 mos. old. And if we weren't home we kept him in his crate. Have you looked into crate training? Some people think it is "cruel" but that seems odd to me since our dog runs to get in his crate. And it worked miracles for us during the housetraining phase.

Good luck!

any pet store or Wal-Mart will have a training aid - in a bottle

you go ourside first and put a few drops on the grass - then take poochie out into that area -

they smell that it is 'safe' to pee and poop here - and they go -
AND THEN PRAISE THEM -

Good Boy - pat pat pat

before the bottle is gone - the problem is

*****
and remember to clean the inside errors with vinegar
to remove the 'safe' smell

Try to kennel train it. This is not cruel in anyway, we have done it with all of our dogs. Puppies need to be taken out every hour. You feed them, take them outside, let them have play time, take them outside again, and put them in the kennel. He'll whine when he needs to go out. You have to keep following this, and plus this gives the puppy a space that is just his, they need that.As he gets older increase his out of the kennel time. If you can't watch the puppy when he's out, he should be in a kennel. IT WORKS!!!!Make sure kennel is not to big, give him to much space he'll mess in it.

Is he fastened? If no longer, which may be the advantageous hearth answer there. Is he an nerve-racking dogs? rather if he has been re-homed such rather some time, which will be it. which could make experience for him to be marking his territory. I accept as true with the guy ahead of me, usher him outdoors after the dirty deed. also, does he do it in the front of you? if so, he will be feeling overlooked. If he purely commits the crime at the same time as your away, attempt crating him. good success!

use vinegar on the places he goes, that way he can't smell the urine. and if you see him doing it, have a spray bottle of vinegar ready and give him a squirt. we did this with our male poodle and besides the odd accident, he is the perfect gentleman.
