Just made peanut brittle and accidently put baking powder in by mistake. Requires 1 tsp of baking soda. I added the making soda after I realized the error. Do I need to toss it? Will this effect the taste?

southernserendipiti..........the brittle looks fine, I had no difficulty spreading it. I'll keep you posted.

If you've already made it, I would finish it out and see what the final results are. The end product may not taste differently.

Baking powder has baking soda in it, plus cream of tartar (or something similar) and cornstarch. So, by adding both to your mixture, you've doubled the amount of baking soda, plus cream of tartar and a thickening agent. Excess soda usually causes cakes, et cetera, to taste bitter. And then the additional cornstarch may cause the brittle batter to be thicker before spreading.

Chemistry in baking can be funny -- too much baking soda in a cake will cause it to taste funny and have a fallen center. But there hasn't been much research on brittle. :o) Maybe it won't react with your particular ingredients and it'll be fine.

Be sure and let us know what happens!

you might want to start over or just go ahead and add the baking soda. the soda will make it a little fluffier, with out it the brittle will be quite dense and probably no good. the baking powder probably won't affect it.

1 tsp wont do any harm ;)
go ahead and add in the baking soda, with out the baking soda it will lose its "brittleness" and just be a hard rock of peanut bar :/

lol, enjoy!
