Try using the Sensodyne toothpaste to brush your teeth. Over a week or two it builds up a layer that protects your gumlines. Avoid sugar, sweets, anything hot or cold as this sets the nerve off.

I doubt very much it's your gums causing the problem. You likely need a root canal or have a cavity in the root area. Find a better dentist.

Try rinsing with warm water and a wee bit of salt. Use that baby stuff Anbesol? for when they are teething...it numbs the gum...probably nothing works if it's the nerve that's throbbing. You may even need a root canal.

Clove oil has rescued me from agony many times. Rub it over your gums.

If you are not allergic or asthmatic, rub crushed aspirin on your gum.

Also, do a search on yahoo answers for teeth/toothache and lots of remedies will come up.

Try mouth washing with a weak, warm salt solution. Clean your teeth regularly (at least three times a day) with Sensodyne toothpaste. Don't clean your teeth so vigorously. It really works1

Ibuprofen 800 mg is the best OTC for dental pain. In studies it is equivalent to vicodin. I am not making this up, it is in a medical journal.

theres a product called KANKA. walmart has it. doesnt taste so great at 1st but you get used to it. it has a little plastic applicator that can put it right where you need it.
advice...wipe off applicator before returning it to the bottle as your saliva will dilute it over time

Neat scotch whisky - numbs the pain and kills the bacteria. Tastes better too.
