It seems like after I do a lot of crunches for a while, it actually makes my stomach appear larger instead or slimmer? Any knowledge on this? Tips? Thanks

Just as with any other muscular development, if you do crunches a lot, it will develop and tone that muscle. If you don't want your stomach muscles that developed, just don't do so many repetitions. Really, there's only so much you can do to alter your stomach as some of your body shape is determined by genetics. Aside from that, if you want to tone your whole stomach, you need to do more than crunches. You need to work your obliques and transversus abdominus too. Do reverse crunches and crunches with your legs turned to the side (shoulders still remaining straight) to work those other abdominal groups. This will give you overall tone and will help you work towards that elusive 6-pack so many strive for. Just keep the repetitions down or the muscles will get bigger.

Make sure you are breathing properly when doing the crunches or you can develop the wrong muscles as well.
Breathe in and suck in your stomach as you come up and exhale when you go back down.

And everyone is right about the fat - you have to work that off through diet and cardio (I'm in the same boat) so good luck.

well, if you do a lot of crunches without losing the fat around that area first, yes, it would make that area larger. you would be building up the muscle underneath with the fat still on top.
