Usually to a funeral home, but sometimes to the coroner's office (if an autopsy has been ordered). After the autopsy and release of the body, you would then go to a funeral home. If you die in a hospital or other institution, you can be sent to the on-site morgue until family can be reached and arrangements for a funeral home can be made.
