Can you find a consistant audience of people who will not only like but also want, then buy your canvas at $600. Enough so that you will never know how to paint because you will spend your time selling black streaks on canvas. Painting streaks on canvas won't get you through the lulls.
So the question was why should you learn to paint.
If learning to paint moves you then that is why you should learn.
Or perhaps learning to paint is not what you should do at all.
But why learn how to do anything? For money? For love of learning? For passion? For craft? For art?

The question is coming from envy or frustration at the way the art world works. Don't go there. That is the art devil talking.

Stay true and clear.

It's not the black streak that sells, it's the concept of what the black streak and how it is explained that makes it art. What's behind the streak? How is it composed or placed? Why is it composed or placed in that manner? That what sells pieces that make you scratch your head and go "huh?" I don't always get it either. But after studying art, especially Modern Art, I understand it now more often than not, and even enjoy some of it too.

art is subjective. Whatever you do you can probably find an audience for.

Well, it depends how you put that black stroke down on canvas. I've seen people do remarkable stuff with a single stroke. BUt if it's just a meaningless stroke that has no beauty whatsoever, than PLEASE send me the name and address of the guy who's paying so much.
ANyhow, if someone pays you $600 for a single stroke, how much would they pay you for a genuine peice of art.. ;)

You're right, but you'll never be an artist.
Maybe you could charge another 200 for the frame ?
