They were either stolen or destroyed by Henry VIII, and most have yet to be returned. All those old churches really belong to the Catholic Church.

because there was a war between catholics and protestants back in the day and the Anglicans (protestants) won, therefor catholic churches were either torn down or converted. Although there are catholic churches in England now, they are not old buildings.

I think King Henry the VIII banned the Catholic church, because he wanted a divorce and the Pope would not grant it. His wife bore no sons. He started the Church of England.

Ol' Henry wanted a divorce so he booted Catholicism out and converted ALL of the churches to Anglican. The Protestants and Catholics in Britain have held a grudge ever since breaking out in war in Ireland. Kinda silly, but hey, if you want to believe there is only one answer, you end up covered in blood.

there are several. It is just that they are private homes where they also have little hidy holes for the priests to hide in back when they had illegal Masses. The Catholic Church was outlawed and they killed several priests and parishioners. Too bad. Another nasty section of history but, lets just continue to point the finger at the Catholic Church and ignore all the nastiness done against them throughout the ages

I would imagine that most of them converted to Anglican (or is it Anglicanism?) when Henry VIII outlawed Catholicism and set up the Church of England.
