Sure...big dog? Golden retrievers are great. Small dog? Pugs are great. Lap dog or sport dog? Kids? What ages?
You should really take some time and read about the different types of dogs and figure out what would fit your family best.
Try the resue shelters around your area. Sometime you get into the breaders and the animals are VERY high strung. And remember that muts sometimes have the best personality.
Hope this helps some. Have fun with your new family member !!

well unless I know what size you want I can't give you a definite answer but despite their reputation miniature and standard poodles are gentle and intelligent dogs ( and they don't shed). Poodles also make good family dogs and guard dogs. The standards are a bit big and they both require a fair amount of exercise and grooming, not to mention expensive, so they might not be the dog for you. my second recommendation would be a border collie, they aren't as big and don't need as much grooming, and they are intelligent and willing to please, they too require a lot of exercise.
If you want something not so high maintenance check the link below and try to find one that better suits you
I have three dogs, all standard poodles and they are such darlings, however any dog can be the wrong choice if you don't train them properly!
P.S. STAY AWAY FROM PET STORES get a good breeder or a dog from a shelter, but pet stores are bad news!

Aww that's great. If you have another dog, I would recommend getting a dog of the same or similar breed and of the same or similar size (when it is full grown). Dogs get along better with their own kind. If you don't have another dog, it's up to you. I've watched and owned different size and types of dogs. A small dog is cute and doesn't eat very much, but it is very hard to keep alive because it needs constant attention and cannot be left alone for long periods of time. They also tend to be louder and respond more to their surroundings..often suspicioussly. Right now I have a huge German Shepard. She is a sweetheart and she is very protective of me. Sometimes she is too protective. She will not allow anyone she doesn't know near me and she hates our cat. She is fun to play with, but she is big, sheds a lot, it hurts if she play bites you, and she tears up the couches when we don't pay enough attention to her. An easy loveable dog that I would recommend would be a golden lab, a bishon frise, or any type of terrior. Bishons and terriors are cute and cuddly but are also easy to take care of, don't take up a lot of room, and are versitile. If you want a best friend type of dog I would recommend a golden lab. They tend to shed but they are very affectionate and loyal.

Go to your local Humane Society, or Dog Pound to get an animal. These dogs are waiting for a second chance at happiness. Or check out Petfinder.com and choose your area by typing in your zip code. There are plenty of animals that need homes. BUT FIRST DO YOUR RESEACH! Research breeds by going to breed specific websites, or by going to the AKC or CKC websites and looking through breed descriptions. Petfinder.com even has a questionairre that you can complete to determine what breed would work best for you.
I am partial to Dachshunds, and Beagles but these 2 breeds are not for everyone. And they both shed, and their noses drive them. If you don't want an animal that sheds or is driven by hunting then do your homework before choosing a dog.
Good Luck with your search!

You say getting a new dog so I assume that you had another one before. It depends. I would advise you to go and have a look at the dogs at your local humane society. Don't limit your search to just breeders because even those dogs can have problems.
We got one of our dogs from a humane society(we found the other one wandering streets!!). He was the sweetest dog and we had him till his old age. I would say grab a book with breeds of dogs and look through and see which type best fits your family.
Also on animal planets website they have a dog breed selector. You fill in the information, kind of like a quiz and it gives you breeds of dogs that most fit your family and lifestyle. It's actually really good.
Hope that helped!!

Please make sure that you have a vet and a reputable breeder. Never get a dog from a pet shop most pet shops get their dogs from puppy mills:( You could even adopt a wonderful adult dog from a local shelter in your area, these dogs are just as cute as puppies and some are even already potty trained!
I hope you have a lot of fun with your new family member!!!
go to www.petfinder.com for your local shelter dogs!!

There are no canine that don't shed yet wiry and curly haired canine shed much less. people who're allergic to canine often do greater advantageous with canine who do no longer placed as lots loose hair into the air they breathe. Bostons shed very lots. although, some people who're allergic to a minimum of one breed have no difficulty with yet another breed in any respect, no remember what variety of hair. i decide for to propose domestic dog Mill option on facebook for info on the thank you to locate a purebred domestic dog. in case you are not getting on a waiting record, then you definately are paying for from a domestic dog mill no remember what they say. mutually as you would be rescuing the domestic dog from a shop or internet center guy you will purely help the dad and mom stay in domestic dog mill torture by using paying for this way. ALL stable BREEDERS use a waiting record on the grounds that they only breed doggies while they have properties planned for them. evaluate Boston Terrier Rescue team (additionally could contain a waiting record for an exceedingly youthful canine) or a Boston combination from a guard (additionally a waiting record may be required). different breeds to contemplate that look like a boston: French Bull canine, Pug, Affenpinscher, Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breeds to contemplate that ACT like a boston: Rat Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, German Pincsher Breeds that i think of are astounding: Border Terrier, Brussells Griffon, Maltese or Havanese (long hair yet very elementary mannered and robust with mushy young little ones)

The Newfoundland dog is renowned for its gentleness and easygoingness. In fact the AKC says that “Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed.”
They love being around children and become quite attached to them and are also very forgiving of them. They are a fairly large dog (around 120 lbs.) They are Gentle Giants tough. They love to swim. Overall the dog is a great choice for a family

It's great that you are thinking about getting a dog! Talk to your vet. If you have other animals, then it's best to ask the vet. Try a breeder that you know has produced good offspring (NOT puppy mills) or a shelter. Stay away from puppy mills; they just aren't a good place.

I can't really recommend a kind of dog for you as you haven't given any kind of details as to size, etc. but I do strongly suggest that you go to your local SPCA or humane society to find a dog who deserves a second chance at a loving home. Good luck
