I work at a nursing home and sometimes we lie to the patients with dementia to keep them calm. We always make sure that it's something that won't upset them. It's called therapeutic fibbing. For instance, you might respond to concerns about seeing a tiny person in the corner of the room like this: “Yes, I see the little person over there too, but he’s not going to hurt us.”

I read a story in High School about a man who said he saw a Great Peacemaker come to Earth in the year 2010.
And all the people of the Earth were so happy, they joined hands
and came together, and worked in the spirit of cooperation to prepare the Earth for this Great Peacemaker's appearance.
But he never came. And the Visionary said, "Oh Well"! Do you
think his little deception hurt? I've wanted to pull it off ever
since!

I'd think long and hard about that. It is wrong to tell a lie. You can comfort someone with saying a word-Just being near them, caring about them, etc.

Depends on the size of the lie and the amount of the comfort.

Nobody has to lie to give someone comfort. You can comfort someone by just holding their hand or listening to them. You don't have to say a word. Comfort is knowing that someone cares.

if the lie will harm them in the long run, then no. if it will help them, maybe. it depends on the situation and how huge the lie is. lying to a mother whose son was found dead and giving her false hope is wrong.

If you are talking about "Call things that be not as though they were"...that is one thing...or giving hope to the hopeless...if you really intend them no ill will...it depends on your reasoning behind it.. does the lie more help them or you???
