I see a lot of rates usually about 33cents a square foot.
Thats an easy number too for a math project.

Every region would be slightly different in price. However, it would be between the price range of $150-$200 for the basic installation in most cases.
If you are in the MN - Twin Cities area we would charge $187.55 for the basic installation, $110 for the removal and disposal of the existing carpet. The best Idea is to get an estimate. Many will do this for just a small fee of about $50. It is well worth it!

It depends on what your goal is for this house. If you plan on flipping it and making a few bucks, then I would go carpet. The reason being that a house with carpet in the bedrooms will sell ten times faster than one with laminate in it. If you are planning on living there yourself, then laminate is cheaper in the long run because you don't have to have it cleaned every six months. All in all, they will cost about the same depending on where you live and what is available and how cheap you want to go. You can get cheap carpet for around $8 a sq. yard and add $1 to install. That's about $9 a yard. Your laminate would have to run less than $1 a square foot (installed) to beat that price. You could probably do it, but it depends on how tacky you want to go an, again, how fast you want to sell.

Rates can vary, depending on who you have install it. A lot of carpet stores offter deals on installation when you purchase your carpet from them. I know someone who is a carpet installer and I believe when you just pay to have the carpet installed, he charges about 50cents a square yard. So I guess that would cost $162 in the case of your math problem.
Good luck!!
