How can I find an 'EIN'- (Employer ID No.) before receiving W2, and "w/out" calling co and asking for it?

Ask a coworker or person you know who worked for the company before. They may have a statement of earnings copy from previous years.

Go to freeERISA.com EIN Finder http://www.freeerisa.com/Extras/EINFinder.asp -- it is a paid subscription databases but they allow you 3 free searches. Use your 3 free searches to find the EIN of the company
